Race Night - Denbigh Rugby Club, Friday 4th April
JJ's Top 10 Games in Charge of Llandyrnog
DENBIGH 1 LLANDYRNOG UTD 2
Welsh Alliance
We lost our first game in the Welsh Alliance after being promoted to a strong Rhyl Reserves side and our second game was against our neighbours Denbigh who had a host of players from Liverpool at the time under the management of Roy Cook Hannah (Gary Roberts now at Ipswich was playing) It was vital that we didn't lose our second game and I believe we came back from one down to win with goals by Gareth Martin and Gethin Lloyd.
BETHESDA ATHLETIC 2 LLANDYRNOG UTD 4
Welsh Alliance 24-4-04.
Rhyl Reserves had run away with the League and Llandyrnog, Prestatyn and Bodedern were battling for the runners’ up spot and possible promotion to the Cymru-Alliance. We were on a good run at the end of the season (winning seven and drawing one in the end) but this was the toughest game by far and getting three points was essential. We had a right battle from the start with Bethesda trying to disrupt us with a physical game but we kept our discipline and played good football on a very big pitch and eventually won with goals from Dafydd Jones, Chris Williams, Gethin Lloyd and Gareth Martin.
LLANDYRNOG UTD 2 LLANFAIR P.G. 0
Cymru-Alliance 14-8-04.
This must be in the top ten because it was our first game in the Cymru-Alliance and it seemed the whole village had turned out that afternoon. Nobody knew what to expect and we were all nervous and apprehensive but we played quite well and two first half goals by Ceri James and Neal Hughes settled the nerves and we won comfortably in the end.
LLANDYRNOG UTD 5 LLANDUDNO TOWN 0
Cymru-Alliance 28-8-04.
We were in a purple patch at the time, we had put five past Lex in midweek, four past Halkyn the previous Saturday and we put five past Mold the following Saturday but this was the best football we played. Gareth Thomas had just left Llandudno after three or four games and Llandudno had brought new players in but we played them off the park with quick passing football with plenty of movement and pace. Our goal scorers were Kevin Evans (2) Gareth Martin (2) and Ian Evans but we should have scored more as we attacked throughout.
HOLLYWELL TOWN 5 LLANDYRNOG UTD 7
Cymru-Alliance 8-10-04
I have never been involved in a game as a player or manager, before or since when a side has come back from four goals down to win. We played the game on the Friday night and were hampered before kick off when Gareth Martin and Neal Hughes were held up by traffic as they were coming to the game from university in Liverpool. The team was changed five minutes before kick off and both of them were made subs and also having his first game of the season was Arwel Hughes in goal who after thirty minutes had already been beaten four times as Hollywell looked invincible. We managed to get two goals back before half time but conceded another one straight after the re-start, before Gareth Martin, Neal Hughes and a half fit Ceri James came on. We started to get back into the game and once we had the third we got on top and eventually scored another four to win an unbelievable game by seven goals to five. Scorers were Roger Beech, Anthony Marshall, Dafydd Jones, Geraint Lloyd, Gareth Martin (2) and Ceri James.
LLANGEFNI TOWN 0 LLANDYRNOG UTD 2
Cymru-Alliance 16-10-04
This was what’s called a “professional” performance against a very good Llangefni side where we kept everything very tight on a very heavy pitch with everyone working hard for each other with 100% commitment. I think after this result we were either top or second in the league with Ian Evans getting an early goal and Neal Hughes getting a late goal.
LLANDYRNOG UTD 4 BALA TOWN 1
Cymru-Alliance 27-12-04.
Both sides had been promoted into the Cymru-Alliance that season and were in the top four or five when this local derby came along on Boxing Day and it showed on the gate with an attendance close to 500 people. The first half was goal less but Llandyrnog had to make a change at half time with Gareth Martin having to go off injured and the mercurial Dafydd Jones coming on the right and his performance changed the game. Neal Hughes opened the scoring and Dan Roberts added a second with a diving header, Ian Evans made it three before Neil Davies pulled a goal back. Then Jamie Hulse in the home goal had to go off with concussion with Dan Roberts taking over the gloves and Bala bombarded the home goal hitting the post and many skirmishes in the box before Anthony Marshall broke away to get the fourth.
RUTHIN TOWN 0 LLANDYRNOG UTD 3
Cymru-Alliance 2-1 06.
This was an important game as both teams needed the points to get themselves out of the bottom regions of the league but the home side position was worse as Llandyrnog had two wins in the four games running up to this derby game and had a few points to spare. The Villagers had four members of their successful youth team playing, Miles Todd, David Ross Williams, Stuart Vernon and John Jones and they took the game by the scruff of the neck. Simon Hulse scored with a free kick, Jon Slater adding a second as the Villagers held a comfortable half time lead. Eifion Roberts added a third as they completely dominated the second half with some excellent football. Sadly, Lee Jones and Sion Roberts the Ruthin managers were sacked after this game.
LLANDYRNOG UTD 6 FLINT TOWN UTD 2
Cymru-Alliance 3-11-07
This was the first time that Llandyrnog had hit six goals at home in the Cymru-Alliance and against a side which is always challenging towards the higher echelon of the league. Flint took an early lead but Craig Wilkinson equalised and Anthony Marshall gave the home team the lead just before half time. Neal Hughes added a third at the start of the second half only for Flint to get a goal back but some good attacking football from the Villagers saw them scoring another three goals through Stuart Vernon, Jon Slater and substitute Rhys Llwyd who also hit the post.
BALA TOWN 1 LLANDYRNOG UTD 2
Cymru-Alliance 13-11-07
Bala who were second in the league and an unbeaten home record with six straight wins were beaten under the lights on this Tuesday night. There were no goals in the first half but all the action was in the last twenty minutes plus ten minutes of injury time. Roger Beech scored with a brilliant free kick from twenty five yards over the wall after sixty five minutes to give Dyrny the lead and minutes later a Bala player was sent off for a bad tackle on Anthony Marshall who had to be carried off. Jon Slater added a second after seventy seven minutes and the away side seem to be cruising but Craig Wilkinson was sent off for a second bookable offence and three minutes from the end of normal time keeper Ian Davies was carried off injured after saving bravely at the feet of ex- Dyrny player Gethin Lloyd. Arwel Hughes took over in goal and almost immediately Neil Fisher scored, Neil Davies had a goal disallowed for offside as Bala went all out for the equaliser but Llandyrnog held on for a fine victory.
